About Me

bookbinder megan stallworthy in studio at work bench

After a childhood fascination with all things book, I studied Design History and Bookbinding at Brighton University, and have been a bookbinder for 30 years.

I make sketchbooks, notebooks and bespoke books using handmade, watercolour and pattern papers, leather, vellum and linen. Each book is bound by hand in my studio in West Somerset, using traditional bookbinding techniques and archival materials.

As well as making books for sale and to commission, I repair books, and work with a team of book conservators at All Souls College, Oxford. Read more.

I teach bookbinding; running workshops at arts centres and book festivals, and for art and design students at colleges and universities. Read more.

Drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of paper, linen and leather, I like simplicity in both form and design so that the materials can speak for themselves. I aim to make books that feel calm and subtle, enlivened by areas of colour, pattern or texture.

The tactile nature of a book is also important to me; there is something magical about the feel of a book in your hands and the movement of the turning pages. The books are practical, made to be used and to last.

'Receiving my handmade books from Megan was a treat in every way. Delivery was swift, and the books were so beautifully packaged that I was reluctant to open them. The books were beautifully crafted from gorgeous materials chosen and combined to produce books that are a joy to hold and use.' Kim
