I really enjoyed this recent commission for a 50th birthday present. The recipient has written poems all his life and his wife had the wonderful idea of making them into a book for him. I worked with the artist Simon Young, who printed and illustrated the poems beautifully on Saunders Waterford paper, then I made the book and a drop-back (or clamshell) box for it.
I wanted the binding to be simple and natural, in keeping with the themes of the poems and Simon's lovely watercolour illustrations. I made a pamphlet stitched, two-section case binding, using Dubletta bookcloth (which I love for it's matt texture and subtle tonal variations) and softly textured Murano paper for the endpapers. The box was covered and lined with two tones of the same bookcloth.
This was the lovely feedback from the customer - 'The book has arrived and it has made me cry! So pleased with the result - the box and binding are beautiful and the pages inside are more than I could have hoped for. Thank you thank you!'
I don't think I've made a customer cry before! And I was so pleased to hear the birthday gift was a big success - he was surprised and delighted with it.
Do get in touch if you would like to commission me to make a book for a special occasion, I would be very happy to discuss your ideas and offer advice.
